Scott Welsh | Online TEFL Course Instructor

What classes do you teach at International TEFL Academy?

I teach the Online TEFL Certification Course and have been with ITA since May of 2015.

What is your educational background?

  • BA Arizona State University- Intercultural Communication (1991)

  • MA Arizona State University-   Applied Linguistics (2002)

  • MTESL Arizona State University-  Master’s in Teaching English as a Second Language (2020)

  • Compton’s PESL- Accent Reduction Certification

Where have you taught?

I have taught in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Vietnam, and Iraq, in addition to various teaching positions in the U.S. I currently teach at Arizona State University.

What countries have you visited?

China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia, The Philippines, Singapore, India, Nepal, Iraq, and Turkey.

What is your favorite travel memory?

Having to pay only $8 for my overnight emergency room visit in New Delhi India. Especially in light of the fact that I would have spent more on postage from India trying to get my travel insurance to reimburse me for it. The cherry on top was the lovely hospital staff that took care of me when I was really down with a traveler’s illness and so far from home. Thank you India. I couldn’t have asked for better treatment as a foreigner, so this took a bad experience and made it a quite positive one.

What advice do you have for ITA students who want to teach English abroad?

Even if you get overseas and decide it isn’t for you, you will never have regrets about the experience. It will always be one of your most interesting life experiences, no matter if what transpires is fantastic or less than that.
