Sandy Reno | Online TEFL Course Instructor

Sandy Reno

What classes do you teach at International TEFL Academy?

I teach the Online TEFL Certification Course and have been with ITA since June, 2020.

What is your educational background?

  • Masters Degree in TESOL from the University of Northern Iowa.  25 years working in the field.

  • Colorado teaching license for Culturally Diverse Education.

Where have you taught?

Vietnam, Philippines, Germany, South Korea, Mexico, on a cruise ship, Iowa, California, and Colorado - adult programs, intensive English programs, middle and high school.

What countries have you visited?

Vietnam, Philippines, South Korea, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, France, Germany,  Belgium, Sweden, England, Ireland, Denmark, Holland, Austria, Hungary, Czech Republic, Croatia, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Guatemala, Jamaica, Haiti, and Canada.

What is your favorite travel memory?

So many!  In Paris, I visited a flea market and had a wonderful interaction with an artist who was painting there.  He wrote a personal note on the back of the painting I bought and whenever I look at the painting I am reminded of that lovely afternoon.  Another is I had a student in the U.S. who insisted I visit his parents when I went to Vietnam.  I resisted going to their house because I was busy and thought he would want me to bring a suitcase of his belongings back to the U.S. Finally because he wouldn’t relent, I went.  They turned out to be such a hospitable and warm family and treated me like royalty.  Their kindness and the experiences I had with them will stay with me forever.

What advice do you have for ITA students who want to teach English abroad?

Be open to people and new experiences even if you don’t speak the language well. It will make all the difference.
