Jesica Nkouaga

Online TEFL Class Professor

What class do you teach at International TEFL Academy & when did you start?

I have taught the Online TEFL/TESOL Certification Course since March 2013.

What is your educational background?

- B.A. Global Studies

Where else have you taught?

USA – I have taught ESL at East Tennessee State University and the University of Wisconsin. I have tutored ESL students at Indiana University.

What other subjects have you taught besides ESL and where?

I have taught Montessori preschool in Florida and Minnesota.

Overseas – I taught EFL to children in Thailand, followed by teaching EFL to college-aged women at a community center in Jordan. I taught EFL to elementary-aged children in Honduras. I taught EFL to preschool children in Macau, China, and I taught English and EFL to children in Uganda.

What's Your Favorite Travel Memory?

Uganda and Kenya left the biggest footprints in my mind and heart. I lived by the Nile River and Lake Victoria. Nature does so many incredible things that it is difficult to explain the invasion of fire ants, the sounds of the myriad types of exotic birds and monkeys, the intricate webs of the caterpillars on the trees, and the giant snail in the backyard. If you love beautiful landscape you must take a ride through the Great Rift Valley in Kenya and also see the numerous tea plantations. Despite the bumpy roads, the views were breathtaking. The abundance of children who are so eager to learn, friendly, and open-minded will also leave a lasting impact on you!

What Advice Do You Have for ITA Students Who Want to Teach English Abroad?

You will experience life in a way that will open your eyes and mind to diversity and allow you to become more fully immersed in native cultures; working and living in a new place to become integrated into the society.  This will enable you to better understand different people and make new friend, learn new languages and not just live life but also experience it.
