Mariam Mazboudi

Online TEFL Class Professor

What class do you teach at International TEFL Academy & when did you start?

I teach the Online TEFL/TESOL Certification Course  but also substitute for the face-to- face classes when needed. I started in 2010.

What is your educational background?

I got my BA in Psychology with a minor in French and Chemistry from the University of Illinois at Chicago. I also got my Master’s in Linguistics (TESOL certification) from Northeastern Illinois University. My Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction is from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and my dissertation was on how English as a foreign language is learned outside of the classroom.

Where else have you taught ESL?

- in Austria. I taught Business English and tutored children in English after school.

What other subjects have you taught besides ESL and where?

- I teach graduate classes in Curriculum and Instruction to teachers who want to get certified in ESL or bilingual education at National Louis University. I also teach Research classes to graduate students at Concordia University.

What's Your Favorite Travel Memory?

Finding out that there was another Chicagoan in my Hostel in Sweden and being in the salt mines in Austria, and hiking the Alps (there are just too many to have one favorite).

What countries have you visited?

Canada, Mexico, Austria, Germany, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Poland, Japan, England, Scotland.

What Advice Do You Have for ITA Students Who Want to Teach English Abroad?

I would say: Make the most of your time abroad and check out as many places as you can. If your students are adults, you might end up befriending them, and they can show you places as well. Try to learn the language because that can boost your confidence there.
