What's Your Favorite Travel Memory?

One of my favorite unexpected travel experiences happened while on a river safari in Costa Rica. Our guide asked if we could take an unexpected excursion to meet a friend of his who lived nearby and was having a birthday.  His family friend, Peter, was turning 100 and and had lived his whole life in a small hut over the river (chock full of crocs to my city girl horror) in the Arenal Rain Forest.

Healthy and active, with a sharp sense of humor, he invited us into his home and family and kept us captivated with his stories and adventures. He had never once been to see a doctor, had never taken medications, no electricity, no running water, but healthy and active and amazing at 100.  His daughters fixed us a traditional Costa Rican feast from the farm and taught us about local medicinal plants and recipes. The day offered perspective and appreciation.  Stumbling off path offers no regrets.

What Advice Do You Have for ITA Students Who Want to Teach English Abroad?

Always remember that some of those things you miss most about home in the beginning will fade and offer you new experiences and broader perspective when you realize you don’t actually miss them anymore.  Embrace and jump into the culture where you find yourself.  Strike up conversations, wander and be an inquisitive student as well as a teacher.
