Courtney Bailey - TEFL Course Instructor

What classes do you teach at International TEFL Academy?

I currently teach the main TEFL course at ITA, though my aim is to teach all three specialty courses in the future as well.

What is your educational background?

I began my career in education by teaching Spanish in a K-12 setting. I’ve taught Spanish as a foreign language and then later taught Spanish immersion and ESOL. I have also served as the Director of Immersion and International Programs at a private language school in South Carolina.

I earned an undergraduate degree in Spanish language and culture from National University of La Jolla, a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in ESOL from Concordia University of Nebraska and I am currently pursuing a Ph.D. from Northcentral University in Education with a concentration in English language learning.

Where have you taught?

I have taught primary, middle, and high school students in California, South Carolina, Izmir Turkey, and I also currently teach young learners and adolescent students online, all throughout Latin America.

What countries have you visited?

Countries I’ve visited: Portugal, Spain, France, Cuba, Iceland, Mexico, Ukraine, Russia, Italy, Dominican Republic, Colombia, Morocco, Turkey, Austria, Germany, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium, Liechtenstein, Costa Rica, England, Monaco, Vatican City and Qatar.

What is your favorite travel memory?

It’s IMPOSSIBLE to choose just one! I’d have to say that my number one favorite travel memory is when I first set off with my children to teach English as a foreign language in Turkey because this made me feel proud. Another sweet memory for me is when I traveled to Cuba with my children for the first time in 2018 for spring break. In the weeks prior, I had asked the school that I was working for at the time, for help and support in collecting school supplies, baby supplies, and toiletries with the objective of making some donations to local schools and different organizations in Cuba. The response from my colleagues and the entire student body was overwhelming and we were able to fill SIX large pieces of luggage with donation supplies! My children were also able to meet local students in schools in Cuba and I got to witness, first-hand, the power of human connection. This was very special and quite memorable for me.

What advice do you have for ITA students who want to teach English abroad?

Live a life of design, not a life of default! Don’t stifle your own ambition by talking up doubts and concerns - instead, believe in your own courage and tenacity to do anything that makes your heart happy and sets your soul on fire!
