What is your role at international TEFL Academy?

I am a Student Advisor here at ITA.

What's Your Story?

I grew up in the Midwest (Iowa) and thanks to my parents, I have traveled internationally from a young age.  I fell in love with travelling and chose to study abroad in Spain during college.  I have always been fascinated by language and love speaking Spanish.  After college, I moved to California and did part-time, flexible work while taking advantage of the schedule to make a handful of international trips that year.

I couldn't get enough and realized I wanted more, so I decided to teach abroad. I completed ITA’s Online Course and moved to South Korea to work as an English Instructor.  I was there for just under two years.  I studied Korean, became a huge fan of Korean baseball (Go Doosan!) and met some amazing people.

When I got back to the states I lived in Portland, OR for a while and now I am living in Chicago and looking forward to continuing my “story” with everyone here at ITA.

Where are you from, where did you go to college & what did you major in at college?

I am originally from a small town in Iowa called Mount Vernon. I attended college at Lawrence University in Appleton, WI and double majored in Psychology and Spanish.

Your first experience travelling abroad?

My first time traveling abroad was with my family when I was in first or second grade. We went to Europe and I don’t recall too much about that trip besides hunting down castles in Germany and being unimpressed with the pizza in Italy.

However, starting in 5th grade I would travel to the Caribbean with my dad for 2 weeks each year and those trips I remember a lot more clearly. He travels there for work and I would tag along but always with the understanding that it would be an educational experience and that I would be required (by my parents) to complete a science project that I would later present to my class when I returned to school.

This lasted until it became too difficult to miss 2 weeks of classes when I reached high school. The specific island that we went to during that time was a small Bahamian island that contained a research station. The research station is housed in an old military barracks and the entire island is only 13 miles long and 5 miles wide. It isn’t exactly what you might picture in your mind when you envision the Bahamas but as a kid I absolutely loved it. When I wasn’t working in the lab with my dad and his students, I was scuba diving and climbing trees.

What countries have you visited?

I visited Italy, Germany, Austria, Luxembourg, Belgium, France, Bahamas, Bonaire, St. Croix, Peru, Morocco, Portugal, Belize, Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Mexico, Canada, South Korea, North Korea, Spain and Israel.

WHAT's next on your list?

I would love to go to Argentina, India and Hungary (Budapest) next.

Work/Taught/Study/Long-term travel experience:

I studied abroad in Granada, Spain during college and fell in love with the area and also the country as a whole. I then taught English in Seoul, South Korea for just under 2 years. While I was there I studied Korean and immersed myself into the culture as much as I could.

Name some of your favorite literature & media:

Books: I love reading and it is hard to narrow it down to just one favorite.  It is always changing.

Films: I enjoy comedies and foreign films- I am particularly drawn to Spanish, Korean and Japanese films.

Music: I am a big fan of Florence + The Machine.

TV: The Office, Parks and Recreation and the occasional K-drama.

What is your favorite international cuisine?

I really love all ethnic food but I would say Thai and Indian are definitely at the top of my list.

Best Travel Story?

The first trip that made a major impact on me was when I was studying abroad in Spain. That entire period of time was amazing and really allowed me to learn a lot about myself but there was a specific excursion that I took to Morocco that really left an impression on me.

I stayed in a Bedouin tent in the Sahara Desert and was in awe of the never-ending sand dunes and the vast night sky. Laying on the dunes at night and staring at more stars than I had ever seen, truly put the world into perspective for me. There were shooting stars all across the sky and in that moment, I promised myself that I would forever continue to explore the adventures of the world.

Why do you like working at International TEFL Academy?

I am excited by the opportunity to work with students going through the exact thing I did. I was so impressed with ITA when I was a student that I am thrilled to be able to contribute to this amazing team for future students. I also love working with individuals who share my passion of traveling and cultural exchange and are willing to take that leap into this adventure that will almost certainly change their life.

We can help you see the world!
