What was one of your most memorable travel experiences?

Thai people LOVE days off. As a teacher, you get amazing vacations and long weekends. We had about ten days off for a random holiday so myself, my Spanish friend, my British friend and my pal from the States decided to travel from the top of Vietnam (Hanoi) to the bottom (Saigon) in ten days. Vietnam is huge and I highly recommend not trying to see the whole place in ten days...

We took overnight trains/buses almost every night. During one of our overnight train excursions and being the ‘live on a shoe-string’ kind of group, we reserved a room in the section of the train usually reserved for locals. When we got on the train, we realized we would be sharing our bunks with two others. The night began with us and two Vietnamese older men. Within about five minutes, one of the men decided to try his best to court my British pal.

Through hand gestures and google-translate, the courtship hilariously ended and we fell asleep. Shortly after, the older men departed and were replaced by two younger men who loved Lady Gaga. We listened to her latest jams on blast for a couple of hours. At this point we are well into the early morning hours. Our new friends got off, I fell asleep and about an hour later I awoke to the sound of a creature trying to escape from a box. I looked down and noticed that our newest bunk-mates had brought a couple boxes of chickens along for the ride.

The chickens were clearly unhappy with their situation and made it well-known to our cabin. We finished the ride with these new pals and learned that if you are going to expect to actually sleep during an overnight train ride, you should probably spend the extra five bucks and reserve a space large enough for your group and in the special ‘VIP foreigner’ area.
