This is a QCF Level 5 course and is accredited by NCFE, one of the leading accrediting bodies in the UK. QCF Level 5 is the highest level of accreditation for TEFL certification, and is the equivalent of a CELTA course. During your TEFL Certification Course in Chicago, you will receive instruction from university-level professors and work with our highly experienced team of advisors and support staff. TEFL Training Chicago:
TEFL classes are held at the International TEFL Academy World Headquarters in the heart of Chicago's Lakeview / Lincoln Park neighborhood. Spread over more than 4,000 square feet, the ITA complex includes brand new classroom facilities, computer work stations, reference library and student lounge. We are five minutes away from Lake Michigan and 15 minutes from downtown Chicago by train or car.
TEFL Chicago Professors:
All instructors hold at least a Master's degree or a PhD in TESOL or a related field and all have at least 10 years of professional teaching and training experience at the university level. Classes will typically be taught by two instructors per class to provide a variety of experiences and perspectives to our students.
Students & Eligibility:
There is a maximum of 12 students per class session to ensure maximum personal instruction time. Our Chicago TEFL students ages range from 18 - 88. Nobody is too young or too old to earn their TEFL Certification.
Native English speakers with a high school diploma are academically eligible to join the course. Non-native speakers are also eligible, but must submit a written essay to their advisors and engage in an interview to assess their level of English proficiency. Student Teaching:
Live practice teaching (practicum) with actual ESL students (not role playing with fellow students as some TEFL schools offer) is an integral part of any accredited, professional-level TEFL training program. For your practice teaching, you will be providing lessons to local ESL students from the Chicagoland area.
International TEFL Academy offers free ESL lessons to the Chicago community as part of our dedication to serve the local community. All student teaching is observed by our class professor and given immediate feedback. This is important for the TEFL student to have their professor observe (not just a staff member) and to meet criteria establised by our accrediation of NCFE. If reviewing another TEFL school, ask them who is providing the observation, if it is not a professor with a MA or PhD or equivelant qualifications your training is not thorough.

Housing Options in Chicago during TEFL class:
We can provide advice on housing options nearby in hostels that are located in Lincoln Park and downtown Chicago, all within minutes from public transportation.
Several hostels are conveniently located near the course location with prices ranging from $27-$35 USD and up per night. Hostel options include Hostellng International, AAE Chicago Parthenon Hostel, and Chicago Getaway Hostel. Short-term furnished apartments and subleased rooms are available throughout the city year round.

To Chicago:
Chicago has two major airports: Chicago O’Hare Airport in the north and Chicago Midway airport in the south. Amtrak and Greyhound provide service to central Chicago.
Transportation in Chicago to your class location:
Once you arrive in the city, Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) offers excellent public transportation by bus and train; taxis are readily available as well. We are located one block from the Diversey Brown Line stop. The bus lines run on Diversey to our front door and the Halsted, Clark Street and Broadway bus lines are minutes away. Free parking is available in front of our building and around the block in residential neighborhoods.
ITA TEFL/TESOL Course Curriculum
Pre-Course Grammar Module (non-assessed)
This module is designed to provide students with an opportunity to brush up on their grammar prior to beginning the course. There are no assignments, however it does incorporate self-assessed tasks with answers provided to help with Unit 1 - The study of English. (Pre-course Grammar Module is available upon registration)
Graded Course
Unit 1: The Study of English
Module 1 – Grammar
- Tasks on the understanding of grammar, tense, and structure
- Completed with the use of a grammar book.
Module 2 – Phonetics
- Tasks relating to the phonetic alphabet (given), stress & intonation.
Module 3 - Lexis
- Tasks relating to the presentation of vocabulary, compound words, word stems, appropriate language & frequency.
Unit 2: The Teaching and Learning of ESL
Module 1 - Basic Principles
- Answers from your own experience, the course materials & handbook on:
- The blocks which may prevent learning
- Motivation
- Communicative competence.
Module 2 - Reading and Listening
- Tasks based on exploitation of authentic materials i.e. magazines, newspapers, radio broadcasts etc.
Module 3 - Speaking and Writing
- Tasks based as above but with a more productive bias
- Getting your students to produce language
Module 4 - Visual Aids
- Study of all the audio-visual aids available. Production of your own flashcards and aids to be used with a simple story board.
Module 5 - Error Correction
- Examining authentic student errors, classifying them, using a correction code, producing remedial exercises and improving your own error correction methods.
Unit 3: Lesson Planning
Module 1 - Classroom Management
- Tasks relating to student teacher relationships and how to achieve genuine communication inside and outside the classroom.
Module 2 - Lesson Stages and Plans
- Putting all the above into a lesson; timing; warm-up; input; presentation, practice and production stages of your lessons.
