As someone with a bachelor's in education who’s dream was to travel, ITA helped show me that dream could become a reality! I loved this course and the additional knowledge, resources, and tools it gave me to not only use in my ESL career but certainly what I learned can carry over into the general education classrooms here in the U.S. as well. - ITA Alum Suzy Rowe

The vast majority of teaching positions available through our Job Placement Program are in either private language institutes or private high schools and grade schools. Here's a brief overview of what teaching in each type of institution entails.
Teaching at a private language institute in Costa Rica presents a uniquely rewarding opportunity for ESL teachers. Engage with a diverse array of students from various age groups and cultural backgrounds, with a notable prevalence of young adults. The environment at these institutions is vibrant and rich in cultural diversity, offering ample opportunities for meaningful interactions with both local and international students.
With typically smaller class sizes, teachers enjoy the benefit of providing more personalized teaching and developing deeper connections with their students. Teachers should anticipate a mix of in-person and virtual teaching formats within these institutions.
Most of the language institutes we collaborate with are situated in the Central Valley, but we also offer placements near the Pacific Coast. Saturdays are a common working day.
Educating in Costa Rica's private elementary and high schools offers a rewarding and varied career experience for teachers. Within these settings, educators are met with eager students and supportive parents, all within environments that typically boast more resources than their public counterparts. The advantage of smaller class sizes in private institutions means teachers can adopt a more tailored teaching style, effectively addressing the unique learning preferences and requirements of each student.
In these settings, educators are bestowed with the chance to craft a wide-ranging curriculum. This curriculum not only embraces progressive teaching strategies and cross-disciplinary studies but also thrives on the support of cutting-edge facilities and technology. Such an enriching atmosphere propels the all-round growth of students, weaving together academic excellence with a range of extracurricular pursuits that nurture creativity, sportsmanship, and a sense of community.

Salaries can range from $700 USD - $2000 USD per month. Costa Rica is known as a break-even destination for ESL teachers. While you may save some portion of your salary each month, you should not expect significant savings. However, you will earn enough to live comfortably and enjoy all that Costa Rica has to offer.
For those teaching English in Costa Rica through ITA's guaranteed job placement program, degree holders can anticipate an average monthly salary ranging from $1000 to $1800 USD.
Non-degree holders typically earn between $700 and $1000 USD per month.
It's important to recognize that building a full teaching schedule may take time. New teachers may experience lower pay in their initial months when they will likely work fewer hours while breaking into their new position.
Some teachers can potentially save 10-15% of their base salary, translating to roughly $100 to $500 USD per month, depending on the placement, salary rate, teaching hours, and experience and background. Not all positions provide such savings.
For those placed in academies with fewer teaching hours or lower pay, supplemental income through online teaching is a viable option.
It's important to note that most salaries are paid in US Dollars,
Some positions may include a benefits package including paid leave, annual bonuses, and health care coverage.
Prospective teachers should carefully evaluate the benefits package offered by each school to fully understand their compensation.
The requirements to participate in our Teaching Abroad Program in Costa Rica with Job Placement are:

Ultimately, you will find and decide on your own housing. Our in-country team will provide guidance and access to resources to assist you in finding suitable accommodation when you head to your school placement in Costa Rica.
Your employer and colleagues may also provide some guidance, and it is not uncommon for teachers to share housing. This can help lower costs and expand your social circle compared to living alone.
Most private housing options for English teachers range from $300-$500 monthly, and homestay options may also be available.
During the one-week cultural orientation program, accommodations in a hostel-like environment are included with your program fee.
Typically, it is not common to be placed together in the same school - it often depends on job availability. Friends, spouses, and partners can often get placed at the different schools nearby so that you can live with each other. Spouses and friends enrolling in this program require pre-approval.
ITA's Job Search Guidance comes included with your TEFL course. It is a service designed to provide you with the resources you need to get a great TEFL job, including personalized assistance. It does not arrange interviews for you or place TEFL certified English teachers into specific jobs. The majority of the schools we work with are located in Costa Rica's Central Valley, in the provinces of Heredia and San Jose. This is because Heredia and San Jose are primary population centers where most schools and teaching opportunities are located.
While coastal locations are certainly appealing, there are many advantages to living and teaching in the Central Valley. In many respects, this is the best region for shopping, dining, nightlife, culture, and making new friends.
The weather is also extremely pleasant year-round, and the Valley's central location means that you can easily access both coasts and Costa Rica's famous rainforests, volcanoes, and national parks.
The vast majority of teaching positions available through our Job Placement Program are in either private language institutes or private high schools and grade schools. Here's a brief overview of what teaching in each type of institution entails.
Working at a private language institution in Costa Rica offers teachers a unique and enriching experience. ESL teachers can expect to engage with students of varying ages and backgrounds. These institutions' environments are typically dynamic and culturally diverse, providing a platform for significant interaction with local and international students.
Teachers are likely to experience smaller class sizes, which allows for more personalized instruction and a closer teacher-student relationship. This setting often encourages innovative teaching methods and a flexible curriculum tailored to meet students' specific needs. Employers will typically expect you to work a combination of in-person and virtual classes at language institutions.
The majority of the language institutes we work with are located in the Central Valley, although we do have connections closer to the Pacific Coast as well. NOTE: Be prepared to work on Saturdays, as many students take classes on their day off.
Teaching at private elementary and high schools in Costa Rica provides educators with a fulfilling and diverse professional experience. In these institutions, teachers can expect to work with motivated students and engaged parents, often in a more resource-rich environment compared to public schools. The smaller class sizes common in private schools facilitate a more personalized approach to teaching, allowing educators to cater to individual learning styles and needs effectively.
Teachers in these settings have the opportunity to develop a comprehensive curriculum that may incorporate innovative teaching methods and interdisciplinary learning supported by modern facilities and technology. This nurturing environment encourages students' holistic development, blending academic rigor with extracurricular activities that foster creativity, sportsmanship, and community involvement.
Open to degree holders only.
Medical care in Costa Rica is generally accessible and far less expensive than in the United States. That said, we recommend that participants obtain travel insurance to cover themselves for at least 90 days before arriving in Costa Rica.
If you do not have insurance upon arrival, our team can provide information about local private plans available for enrollment. Also, some teaching jobs may include health insurance in their benefits package.
What is 100% guaranteed:
Contract Length: Guaranteed placement in teaching positions with contract lengths ranging from 6 to 12 months.
Salary Expectation: Candidates can expect an average salary ranging from $700 to $2,000 per month, depending on the job and their own academic and professional background and qualifications.
School Type and Location:
Placement in institutes located in the Central Valley region of Costa Rica. We will do our best to accommodate request for other regions, but the vast majority of schools are located in the Central Valley.
Job Search Support:
Continuous support throughout the job search process, including resume preparation, interview coaching, and contract review.
Whilst knowing Spanish is not a requirement for the program or to teach in Costa Rica, we have found that people who know some basic Spanish are better able to integrate into their community, which ultimately allows for a better experience overall.
Visas can be intimidating and confusing, but our team is here to help. Never hesitate to ask questions of your admissions advisor, and once you enroll in the program, our team will provide you with the -pre-departure guidance your need.
You will arrive on a visa exemption or tourist visa, valid for 180 days. You must ensure your onward ticket is booked near the 180-day mark. If your school hires you on a tourist visa, you must leave and re-enter every 180 days for a new visa, often traveling to Nicaragua or Panama.
About 60% of schools require a work permit, which requires an apostilled birth certificate and criminal background check. Schools may charge a visa fee for processing, and participants often cover their visa run costs. Some schools might ask for upfront visa costs, with later reimbursement.
When working at a language academy or international school in Costa Rica, tax obligations depend on whether you are hired as an employee or independent contractor. Larger institutions may provide guidance, while smaller schools may pay in cash with minimal support.
For U.S. Citizens
Worldwide income must be reported, but income below a certain threshold is often tax-exempt. The Foreign Earned Income Exclusion allows up to $120,000 of foreign income to be excluded from U.S. taxation.
However, self-employment taxes may still apply. Generally, self-declaring income is sufficient, but tax regulations vary by country, so personal research is essential.
Independent Contractors in Costa Rica
Many schools hire teachers as independent contractors. Those who go through the work permit process must pay both monthly and annual taxes:
Monthly tax: Approx. $30 USD or 2% of income.
Annual tax: Typically $400–$500 USD.
Due to the complexity of tax filing, many teachers hire an accountant for assistance.
Employees in Costa Rica
Full-time employees do not typically owe U.S. taxes due to the foreign income exclusion. However, they are subject to local taxes in Costa Rica. Citizens of other nations should check with their national tax regulations to determine if they will need to pay taxes.
Employers in Costa Rica have different hiring practices, but anyone working full-time in the country is generally subject to Costa Rican taxes—except those employed by an online school based outside Costa Rica.
