Osbaldo Gutierrez | Admissions Advisor

What is your role at International TEFL Academy?

I am an Admissions Advisor and have been a part of the ITA team since July of 2022. My job is to guide you and assist you in order to make your dreams come true by teaching English abroad.

What's your story?

I grew up in Los Angeles, my family didn’t really travel but I was always watching animal planet and travel-related shows such as those with Anthony Bourdain. Those TV shows hooked me on the idea of traveling one day. It took me until I was 25 years old when I finally got the courage and stopped waiting for other people to join me, and I went on a backpacking trip by myself for 3 months all over Asia. It was hands down one of the coolest things I have ever done. I ended up running a marathon in Khanom, Thailand on a whim just because I saw the ad for the marathon in an airplane pamphlet. I got bit by the travel bug, and I knew I had to do whatever it took to live abroad and continue traveling. That's how I ended up getting TEFL certified and went to teach in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Where are you from and where did you go to college?

I’m from Los Angeles California and I went to school in Northern California at Cal Poly Humboldt.

What was your first travel abroad experience like?

I traveled to Mexico when I was 10, that was cool but I don't remember much. My first big travel abroad experience was a solo backpacking trip that I took in 2017 for 3 months where I went to - Korea, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Japan. It was jam-packed and I was constantly moving. It was absolutely amazing and I wouldn’t change it one bit.

What countries have you been to?

I’ve been to Korea, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, The Philippines, Mexico, and Japan.

Where have you lived/taught abroad?

I lived and taught in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Best travel story?

During my 3-month backpacking trip, I was on an AirAsia flight from Cambodia to Thailand. I was checking out the pamphlet and learned about a marathon happening in Khanom Thailand in a couple of days. When my flight landed, I signed up for it and the next week I ran the marathon in 4 hrs and 2 minutes winning 3rd place in my age group.

Favorite ethnic food?

Indonesian food, Mexican and Chinese food.

What excites you about working at ITA?

I’m excited to talk about travel and help people get the amazing opportunity to change their lives forever, by living abroad and teaching English.
