How will I complete the practice teaching for my online TEFL course?

How will I complete the TEFL practicum for the International TEFL Academy 170 hour online TEFL certification course?

online tefl practicum clasThe term “practicum” refers to 20 hours of practice teaching, observation and/or tutoring that you must complete in an ESL or EFL classroom setting to earn your accredited TEFL certification – most schools looking to hire English teachers will not recognize TEFL/TESOL certification courses that do not incorporate a TEFL practicum

These TEFL practicum hours allow each student to gain firsthand experience practice teaching with real ESL students, whether it is in an actual classroom setting, or by tutoring a non-native speaker privately. Students typically complete their TEFL practice teaching and observation in their home community or wherever they are living when they are taking our 170-hour online TEFL/TESOL certification course.

As a TEFL student, you will arrange your TEFL practicum on your own, but International TEFL Academy will provide assistance and guidance.  Basically you must spend 20 hours in a live ESL learning environment observing an ESL class, and/or practice teaching and tutoring ESL students in some capacity.

Locations Where You May Complete Your TEFL Practicum:

tesol online tefl online laptop classOpportunities to complete your TEFL practicum and practice teaching can typically be arranged in your community in these types of venues, which often offer ESL classes:

  • Community centers
  • Community colleges
  • Language schools
  • Local organizations that provide services to recent immigrants
  • Faith-based groups that offer ESL classes
  • Libraries

If you begin teaching English abroad prior to the end of your course, any teaching hours you engage in can be applied towards your TEFL practicum requirement. Once the TEFL practice teaching hours have been completed, the student provides an evaluation form, time sheet and one-page summary of their experience to the International TEFL Academy Student Affairs Department.

To accommodate those who do have a busy schedule, all students are given an automatic 30 day extension to complete their practicum. For example, for a course running from January 31 – April 15, all students have an additional 30 days from April 15 to complete their practicum.

I currently teach English as a Foreign Language in Japan where I didn't need a certificate. Can I use those hours toward a practicum?
Posted @ Friday, December 14, 2012 12:36 AM by Krista
Krista, hope life is treating you well in Japan! If you are teaching ESL to non-native speakers while you are taking the online course, that can count towards your practicum. If you haven't done so already, fill out a contact form and you will be put in touch with an advisor who will work with you on answering all of your questions about certification, teaching opportunities worldwide, job search guidance and more. Hope this helps!

Hi there,

Could the practical part be accomplished by online hours? IE a situation teaching conversational english online to a non english speaker? This seems to be more and more common now (conversational english usually).

Please let me know,

Thanks,

Mito

Hi Tossa, you realize you are on a teaching training website and you are stating you want a paid professional job as a teacher but you don't want to be trained in ESL, just to show up and wing it for a job. Good luck with that. When you are serious about a teaching job contact us and ask about TEFL classes to prepare you to get a job abroad, we would love to help.

Hi, im want to do the TEFL course but not to sure how I will be able to do the TEFL practicum here in South Africa, Johannesburg. Would you be able to help with this? Where, what, how...

I'm currently teaching English full time and have done so for more than seven years. I also have a Teaching Certification for Elementary and High School. I'm interested in getting a TEFL cert to expand my options to other countries, namely the Middle East. How much will the TEFL certification actually help in opening the doors for getting to the interview process? And are the opportunities connected with a TEFL mainly private language schools, as are popular in Japan, or are they in government school boards? I'm looking into this right now, but thought I'd post the question so others can see the answer too.
