How Can I Legally Teach English in Spain?

For Americans and other non-E.U. citizens, getting a work visa to teach English in Spain can be difficult to say the least. Through ITA's Teach & Student Visa Programs, you will get a student visa that allows you to live, travel, and get paid to teach English for up to 40 hours per week while studying Spanish in Madrid. The student visa is valid for 12 months and can be renewed for another 12 months.

Who can apply for the program? 

Applicants must generally be at least 21 and possess a bachelor's degree. Non-native English speakers are also considered on a case-by-case basis and will be required to write an essay and participate in a phone interview. There is no age limit if you are 21 or older.

Anyone with a degree can apply to any of our Teach & Study Visa Programs in Madrid, depending on their goals and TEFL certification status. Check out the features of each program to choose the best option for you!

When should I apply for these options?

IMPORTANT! For any Madrid program option, you should apply, pay your deposits, and start the student visa application process at least 4-5 months before you want to arrive in Madrid. Students who process the visa in Madrid must bring a completed criminal background check from their home country.

NOTE: Make sure to arrange an appointment with the Spanish Embassy or Consulate at least 6 weeks and no more than 12 weeks before your intended arrival.

How do I know which option to choose?

Your best option will largely depend on your TEFL certification status and which TEFL course you wish to take if you are not already TEFL certified.

  • Program 1: For students who are not TEFL certified and want to complete a portion of their certification in Madrid. 
  • Program 2: For students who were previously TEFL certified in person.

Program 1: Madrid - Teach & Study Visa Program with Hybrid TEFL Course (Online/Madrid)

This program is designed for degree holders who want to complete an accredited TEFL course in Madrid, study Spanish, and teach English in Spain legally on a student visa.

If you are not already TEFL certified and want onsite training, this Madrid option is for you!

Features

This Madrid Student Visa Option Includes:

  • Madrid TEFL Course plus 1-year Student Visa offered through Universidad Europea del Atlantico.*
  • Six Months of Part-Time Spanish Classes (5 hours per week)—Students will receive 3 hours of part-time classes per week for 7 months to keep their Spanish progressing throughout their time in Spain.
  • Personalized Job Search Guidance with a Premium CV/Resume Service that connects you with over 300 schools in the Madrid region—Upon your arrival, we will schedule a meeting to review your CV/resume and make any needed edits. From there, we will send it to our partner’s premier school and academy list.
  • Four Weeks of Intensive Spanish Classes and Cultural Activities – Once participants have completed their two weeks of teaching practices, they can begin Spanish classes. Students will be given a level test and placed in a class that suits his/her needs. Classes are from 9 am – 1 pm or 1:30 pm to 5:30 pm for 20 hours per week.
  • Six months of Ongoing Professional Development Leading to an Advanced Certificate in TEFL are mandatory for those wishing to renew their visa for a second year.
  • Evaluation with Teaching Supervisor—As this is a university course, your paid teaching placement will be assessed. This can be a visit from a team member, your boss, or your supervisor. The evaluation is given to ensure you meet all of your teaching requirements and that the school meets its requirements as an employer.
  • Cultural Activities - Cooking classes, dance classes, visits to museums, and conversation workshops are just a few activities you can participate in to experience and gain insight into Spanish culture and history.
  • Pre- and Post-Arrival Assistance for organizing accommodations, setting up a bank account, acquiring a cell phone, etc. Upon arrival, a Trainee Support Coordinator will sit down with you about obtaining your NIE (foreign identification card). They will go through a step-by-step list of what needs to be done. You will receive a packet of legal documents that must be filled out and presented to the Ministry of Foreigners Department.

*The Advanced TEFL Course: Students will also have the opportunity to complete an Advanced Certificate in TEFL which includes:

  • Deposit: Approximately 815 euros ($900 USD paid to International TEFL Academy).
  • Remaining Balance: 2800 euros (paid to TtMadrid at least 30 days in advance of your arrival in Madrid. The balance must be paid in full in order to begin the student visa process).

The total cost for this option does not include any visa fees. All visa fees must be paid by the student to the consulate directly. Visa fee for Americans is approximately $160 USD.
