What Are the Basic Requirements for Teaching English in Spain?

By Paige Lee

1.  NOT a requirement – Four-year college degree!

First, let’s start with what you don’t need to teach English in Spain, a completed 4-year college degree. Demand for English language education among Spaniards is robust and a native English speaker is the ideal educator for the world’s 2nd language. Therefore, it’s common for language schools or families looking to hire tutors based on the fact that they are a native speaker with a TEFL certification and not to prioritize a 4-year degree. Great news for the 1/4 of ITA’s certified teachers looking to live abroad without having completed their 4-year degree!

Can I Make Money as a Private Tutor While Teaching English Abroad?

Check Out Insider Tips on How You Can Make Money as a Private English Tutor Overseas

By Jeff Penick

Can you make money giving private English lessons abroad?

Yes! Private tutoring on the side is very common while teaching English abroad; especially because teachers can often earn more per hour compared to what their school pays them. In fact, in some countries, teachers will private tutor full-time if they can accumulate enough students to fill their days, and in some markets, private tutoring is actually the most common way for teachers to find work.

This is the case, for example, for Americans in the Spanish city of Barcelona, where most language schools hire exclusively European Union (EU) citizens. Luckily, demand for private lessons is extremely high so Americans can make a livable wage, but the bottom line is that if you are an American, and you want to teach English in Barcelona, you need to count on teaching private lessons.

YES, however options will be more limited than if you were looking to teach English abroad for a year or even for six months.  Except for some short-term contract work, most language schools look to hire full-time teachers for 10-12 month contracts.  This means that most short-term opportunities for English teachers will be either in summer camps or in a volunteer capacity.
