Espanniversary: How I've Changed Over One Year in Barcelona

By Kayla Anderson

Let’s start at the beginning. August 19, 2017: I’m sharing a bed with my mom, phone light furiously glowing at 1am as I read and re-read ITA Alumni stories regarding teaching English in Barcelona. I’ve never been to Spain. I studied design at University and have $2,000 in my bank account. I don’t know a lick of Spanish.

My one-way flight to Barcelona is 10 days away.

Why I Am No Longer Teaching

Where My Journey Began

I found my passion for teaching by a very strange turn of events. A truly “Sure why not?” method, one could say. It all started with a ring when I was in the midst of deciding whether or not to leave my university in Manhattan, New York after only one semester.

How My Plan B Turned into My Plan A: Teaching English in Barcelona

By Kaci Tokumoto

Living in Europe has been a goal of mine for many years. In January 2015 I really set my mind on it and started doing research and making plans to move. At the time I was seriously considering Vienna, I travelled there to do research, and talked to people about renting flats. I was still unsure of what to do for work. Finding and applying for jobs was more difficult than expected. I even considered getting a job in the US with a company that has offices in Europe then applying for a transfer. That would have taken much longer than I wanted.
